Why two labels

The EU-Ecolabel and the Nordic Ecolabel are not two competing brands. In fact, the two labels are two sides of same coin. But why are there two?

Equally good

The biggest difference between the EU-Ecolabel and the Nordic Ecolabel is that they arise from two different departments, covering different markets. Though the goal and environmental standards
are virtually identical.

When the EU Commission established the EU-Ecolabel in 1992 the ambition was to develop a label that could bring together all national and regional eco-labels. Including the Nordic Ecolabel, which was established by the Nordic Council of Ministers in 1989.

There are however some practical considerations which makes the two labels continue to live side by side. For example, more product groups can be labelled with the Nordic Ecolabel than with the EU-Ecolabel.

Consumer or purchaser?

As a consumer or purchaser, you should not spend time finding the difference between the EU-Ecolabel and the Nordic Ecolabel. Both brands ensure that there is an environmentally friendly product in good quality, also taking into account your health.

Producer

Are you a manufacturer of a product that both can get the EU-Ecolabel and the Nordic Ecolabel, it may be a good idea to choose the brand, depending on if you are going to sell more to Europe than Scandinavia. And hence what brand consumers in those markets is most familiar with.
