UN Sustainable Development Goals

The Nordic Swan Ecolabel and the EU Ecolabel are powerful tools for ensuring a sustainable future. The official ecolabels actively contribute to accomplishing several of the UN Sustainable Development Goals - the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to environmental degradation and the need for stopping climate change before 2030. The ecolabels especially contribute to accomplishing the 12th global goal about ensuring sustainable consumption and production.

SDG on a field background

In 2015, the UN adopted 17 world goals and a total of 169 sub-goals, which will help solve many of the world's challenges by 2030. To achieve these goals, everyone must contribute: governments, the private sector, the public sector and each individual.

The Nordic countries are generally good at accomplishing most of the UN SDG goals. but when it comes to goal number 12 about ensuring sustainable consumption and production, we have improvement potential. Here, the Nordic countries are only halfway to what is required to accomplish this goal.

The Nordic Swan Ecolabel and the EU Ecolabel are effective tools for securing a sustainable future – and actively contribute to accomplishing goal number 12. The ecolabels work to reduce the total environmental impact from production and consumption - and the entire product life cycle - from raw materials to production, usage, disposal and recycling - are included in the assessment, when the requirements for ecolabelled products are defined. This ensures more environmentally sustainable production and control back in the supply chain - and it ensures more environmentally sustainable products for the end user.

In addition, the Nordic Swan Ecolabel contributes to another 10 of the other global goals, while the EU Ecolabel contributes to another 9. The objectives involved depend on the specific product group.

You can see what global goals the official ecolabels contribute to in our fact sheet on the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and the EU Ecolabel. The focus of the ecolabels is environmental aspects, but the ecolabels also emphasize health and social aspects where relevant.

The Nordic Swan Ecolabel has criteria for 60 product groups - the EU Ecolabel for 24. In Denmark, there are more than 29,000 ecolabelled products and services. The consumers awareness and recognition of the ecolabels is high and furthermore, the Procurement Act allows public purchasers to make claims about ecolabels, and consumers' knowledge of the brands is high. Thus, there is good reasons to see the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and the EU Ecolabel as part of the solution to the global challenges.
